Festive Fun: Holiday Games Physical Therapy Edition

The Solid Foundation team recently hosted a mobility seminar, sharing a variety of exercises to improve the participants mobility. As a team, we are committed to empowering individuals to take control of their physical health so we made sure the exercises were things you could easily do at home. Yet, we all know the holiday season can be very stressful. While we are busy trying to make it special for our loved ones, we may forget to take some time to care for ourselves.

So, here's a suggestion for this holiday season – why not mix in some holiday games that not only bring in the fun but also help improve mobility? We'll explore a few holiday games that can also act as mobility exercises. Plus, some of these games will throw in a nod to the exercises from the seminar.

  1. Fish The Candy Cane

To set up this game, gather candy canes, a rope, and a bucket. This game is played with teams of two. Begin by placing a bucket filled with candy canes on the ground. Make sure the candy canes are placed hook side up.Next, tie a candy cane, hook side down, around the waist of one player using the rope.

To add a mobility challenge, make sure the candy cane dangles only a few inches from the groin area. Adjust the rope length based on each player’s mobility level. Now, using the assisted deep squat technique, teams will have three minutes to fish out as many candy canes as they can. It’s a fun twist that not only tests your mobility but also adds a dash of team work to the mix.

  1. Hungry Hungry Hippos Have to Stretch

Now for this game all you need are some disposable cups and marshmallows. Start by scattering the marshmallows on the floor to create a pile. Now, get your players to form a circle around these marshmallow treasures and hand them each a disposable cup to cover their hands. Important note: make sure they don't get too close with the actual marshmallow pile.

Now, let the games begin! The goal here is for players to snag as many marshmallows from the middle pile without using their hands to stand up. Since the marshmallows are strategically placed a bit farther away, it's gonna take some stretching to reach them. Alternatively, players can try to use the 90/90 hip switch move to stand up and nab those marshmallow goodies. It's a tasty twist on a classic game that adds a bit of a stretch to the fun!

  1. Ornament Balance Relay

All you will need for this game will be shatter-proof ornaments and spoons. Start by creating an obstacle course with everyday items from your home. Then, create a relay race with colorful ornaments as the balancing element. Players must carry an ornament on a spoon while maneuvering through the obstacle course. This game requires players to use their stability and fine motor skills.

This holiday season, embrace the spirit of joy and wellness by incorporating physical therapy into your festive celebrations. These holiday games not only bring family and friends together but also offer a fun and effective way to engage in movement. Whether you're looking to enhance balance, coordination, or strength, these activities provide a holistic approach to physical well-being. So, gather your loved ones, spread the holiday cheer, and let the festivities become a platform for improved health and happiness.

Are you willing to put in the work?
